Lenovo's new curvy tablet - Hold,Tilt ,Stand

LOS ANGELES: Chinese computer maker LENOVO presented a new tablet device including a bracket-cum-handle allowing it to tilt and stand, which it billed as a "game-changing" innovation.
Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher unveiled the Yoga Tablet at a Los Angeles event which had been shrouded in mystery, with teaser videos and social media hints tagged .

SPECIFICATIONS :-
The device,

> Has 18 hours of battery life.
> Has three modes: hold, tilt and stand.

A cylindrical hinge on one side can either be held, or opened to produce a stand, similar to the kick-stand on Microsoft's Surface tablet.
"Watching and discovering that people frequently use tablets in three main ways allowed us to break the mold on the current 'sea of sameness' designs," said Lenovo senior vice president Liu Jun, calling it "game-changing."
Teaser videos ahead of the event had included some suggesting that it could somehow be attached to furniture or household appliances, but the product appeared less radical.
The device comes in :- 8 and 10 inch models.

Price:-at $249 and $299 respectively. An optional blue tooth keyboard is available for the larger model, which serves as a cover.

It enters a hugely crowded tablet market still dominated by Apples iPad, but with rivals including notably South Korea's Samsung vying to attract customers in the run-up the all important US holiday gift-buying season.

Samsung launches Galaxy Round, world's first smartphone with curved display .. !!

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Wednesday launched the world's first smartphone with a curved display, a variant of the Galaxy Note which moves the Asian giant a step closer to achieving wearable devices with flexible - even unbreakable - screens.
Curved displays are on the frontlines
of Samsung's innovation war with rivals such as Apple Inc and LG Electronics Inc, as the South Korean firm seeks to expand its lead in the slowing market for high-end smartphones.
"It's a step forward for having unbreakable gadgets and flexible devices eventually. But for now, the new phone is more of a symbolic product," said Hana Daetoo Securities analyst Nam Dae-jong, adding that Samsung did not yet have capacity for large-scale production of curved touch-screens for the new Galaxy Round.
The Galaxy Round is Samsung's attempt to gauge consumer appetite for curved phones although its lack of other eye-catching features means it is unlikely to be a hit, he said.
"I don't think it'll be massively compelling enough for gadget buyers as ... the curved display doesn't come with many unique features," he said.
    http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2013/10/Samsung_1.jpg
The Galaxy Round's 5.7-inch (14.4-centimetre) display has a slight horizontal curve and weighs less than the Galaxy Note 3, allowing a more comfortable grip than other flat-screen models on the market, Samsung said in a statement.
Its key features include a tilt function which allows users to check information such as missed calls and battery life, even when the home screen is off. Users can also scroll through media files by pressing the screen's right or left, the company said.
The phone initially would be available only in South Korea and no decision had been made about releasing it in other markets.
    Design challenges
Curved displays open up possibilities for bendable designs that could eventually transform the high-end smartphone market, where growth has slowed amid competition from low-end producers.
Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch released last month has a flat screen, but the company is hoping to have the technology to make more attractive and wearable devices in what is shaping as a key battleground for consumer electronics companies.

Technology firms have yet to figure out how to cheaply mass produce the parts and come up with display panels that can be thin and heat-resistant. Batteries also have to take new forms to support flexible screens that can be rolled out, attached to uneven surfaces or even stretched. The battery in the Galaxy Round is not curved, Samsung said.
Samsung's new curved-screen phone, available through South Korea's biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom Co Ltd, costs 1.089 million won.

How to type like an expert using keyboard

BERLIN: A German scientist has developed asoftware which assists users in identifying and learning keyboard shortcuts so they can become as fast as expert users.

If somebody wants to shift text elements within a Word document from one position to another, he usually uses the mouse. This procedure is rather cumbersome for the user, since he first needs to click and highlight the text element before he can put it at the appropriate place.

The user could avoid such complications by using a few shortcut keys, so-called hotkeys, instead. However, users frequently do not know enough keyboard shortcuts to work with them efficiently, or are not aware of the available combinations.

Gilles Bailly, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics and the Cluster of Excellence at Saarland University in Germany wants to increase the use of hotkeys among less-experienced users and help them maximise expert performance by using consistent shortcuts.

To accomplish this, Bailly developed a special interface mechanism in collaboration with other researchers from several universities. It enables hotkey browsing, supports physical rehearsal and assures rapid hotkey identification.

"To see the hotkeys, the user needs to press a certain key button," said Sylvain Malacria from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

He calls this special key the modifier. On an Apple keyboard, this function is taken by the command key; at a Windows computer, by the control key.

As soon as the user has pressed the modifier, the software overlaps the icons on the screen, as for example all the symbols in a toolbar for a Word document, with shortcuts for a few seconds.

Thus, the interface mechanisms shows small boxes in which every equivalent keyboard shortcut is displayed. In doing so, users who rarely use the computer are given the essential hints to apply the shortcuts until they know them by heart.

The programme supports them by proposing the hotkeys very quickly; they need only press the modifier key. To use the shortcuts more generally, the user frequently has to repeat the same finger moves. In this way, the user keeps remembering the key combinations.

"If the user is in the middle of a workflow, he does not need to remove his hands from the keyboard and reach for the mouse. He is able to enter his commands into the computer directly," said Bailly.

HOW CLOUD COMPUTING WORKS .. !!!

Cloud Computing   has been changing how most people use the web and how they store their files. It’s the structure that runs sites like Facebook, Amazon
and Twitter and the core that allows us to take advantage of services like Google Docs and Gmail. But how does it work?

Let’s understand what the term “cloud“ refers to.  The concept of the cloud has been around for a long time in many different incarnations in the business world. It mostly means a grid of computers serving as a service-oriented architecture to deliver software and data. What differentiates the cloud from the way those are set up is that the cloud utilizes the resources from the computers as a collective virtual computer. The cloud takes advantage of that a lot of the software that people use nowadays are completely web-based. For example, if you are hosting your website on a local server or from your PC, you must usually select a particular operating system (Windows/Linux/Mac), to determine what software you can run on that particular server. If your site is being hosted in the cloud, there is no need to do that. You can run Windows and Linux programs side by side.

    How is that done?
To understand how does cloud computing work, imagine that the cloud consists of layers — mostly the back-end layers and the front-end or user-end layers. The front-end layers are the ones you see and interact with. When you access your email on Gmail for example, you are using software running on the front-end of a cloud. The same is true when you access your Facebook account. The back-end consists of the hardware and the software architecture that fuels the interface you see on the front end.

Because the computers are set up to work together, the applications can take advantage of all that computing power as if they were running on one particular machine. Cloud computing also allows for a lot of flexibility.

Will it change the way we use computers?
Sure, most of us still use some version of Microsoft Office or Quickbooks that was installed on our computers, but even those kinds of software are now offering an online version that can be used instead. The possibility of being able to access your data and software wherever you need it makes this transition very appealing to most people.
